What is the convention for saving an enumeration to the reference architecture? Do you need to put N\_ in front of it?

The reason I ask this is we had an enumeration called MigrationInsurancePropertyType which was not produced before. We used this enumeration in expression fields.

Later someone produced this enumeration and put N\_ before it. Now all our expression fields which use this are wrong. Was the developer supposed to not put N\_ before it? What is the convention for producing enumerations?

The following is taken from the training that is required before being allowed to request changes to the reference architecture:

- Name starts with N\_, followed by NameInPascalCase. The name is in English and may contain A-Z and a-z characters, and if necessary spaces and (braces).
- A logical name that describes the values of the enumeration as a group is preferred. If that is not possible, and the number of values is limited (max. 3), the values may be concatenated to form the name of the enumeration (e.g. N\_DebtorCreditor).
- Only use enumerations for sets of values that are immutable. Once a reference architecture enumeration is used, it cannot be expanded.
- The names of the values are free form, as long as they are in English and understandable in the context of the enumeration name.

These rules relate to the name of the registered name of the enumeration in the reference architecture. As with concepts, that is not how they should be named within the component. In the component they should have proper, translated names. Many examples for well-known enumerations are provided in the guidelines at [Home | Inloggen](https://www.novulo.com/kennisbank/703). It is best practice to follow this pattern for all enumerations.

Ok thx for the documentation. This means that when you create an enumeration and use it in expressions it is fine. That is unitll you produce it, put N\_ before it, then you need to go through the database to fix all those expressions? Sounds like an unwanted way of working…

No, there is no need to change the name of an enumeration in the component when mapping it to a reference architecture enumeration. As I mentioned above, the rules relate to the name of the registered name of the enumeration in the reference architecture. As with concepts, that is not how they should be named within the component. In the component they should have proper, translated names (probably like you named it before).

Ik heb even een voorbeeld uit een component gepakt. Deze enumeration is nog niet geproduceerd:

![image](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex008/uploads/novulo/original/2X/9/9dde8ced9dd99b144de748aba9806b3c88e672db.png)

Nu ga ik deze produceren in de concept manager. Dan moet ik er volgens de richtlijnen dus N\_ voor zetten?

 ![image](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex008/uploads/novulo/original/2X/4/4c1fbd6f111c9ff4fa17bd48f307f84c85b11955.png)

Daarna zie ik dit in de treeview links:

Want zo is het dus ook gedaan denk ik met die vorige enumeration. Doe ik dit verkeerd of begrijp ik het verkeerd?

Enumerations are not produced/consumed. They are just lists of fixed values. They may be registered in the reference architecture and mapped in a component. When you want to register a new enumeration from the Architect, and want to save it with a name required by the guidelines directly from there, then you will have to temporarily rename the enum in the component.

 ![image](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex008/uploads/novulo/original/2X/9/9aa7c7ef245b4b69128780a149a22b652aec5c0c.png)

After saving the enum, you can rename it back in the component.

This is however not necessary. You can also create an enum as is, and rename it in the appserver while it is Draft, before submitting it to the reference architecture board for review. You would need to go to that page to provide documentation before submitting it anyway.

Okay, so if I understand this correctly, when saving an enumeration to the reference architecture for usage in other components, you need to leave the name as is, don’t change it to N\_ in front of it, because that will cause problems in expressions in the application.

That clears it up. Shouldn’t there be a warning for this in the architect? Changing the name of an enumeration when saving to the reference architecture which could already be in use could lead to manual fixing of expressions.
